EXLIDE - A Expose 4 (flash) slideshow module for Gallery2
INTRODUCTION
Tired of the boring javascript slideshow bundled with Gallery I decided to integrate a nicer flash slideshow into its own module.
Expose uses an xml source to show one or more albums, with thumnails, comment and, of course, a nice transaction between the pictures.
INSTALLATION & REQUIREMENTS
Gallery must be running in an own subdomain as http://gallery.mydomain.com. It will not work if you are running gallery in http://mydomain.com/gallery2 or the like
Gallery2 with mod_rewrite enabled should work.
Set up the module:
Copy the content of the Exlide-0.10.tar.gz archive into your gallery2/modules directory.
The final path should look like $GALLERYPATH/modules/exlide.
Set up the flash:
Download Expose from http://www.slooz.com/download.php?f=expose4_r4.zip
Unzio the archive and copy the “expose” folder and the “showpic.html” file into your “$docroot/exlide” (f.i public_html/exlide) in so that the folder exlide is visible through your webserver. If your Gallery installation is visible at http://mywebserver.com than the content of the exlide folder should be accessible at http://mywebserver.com/exlide
If you did all correctly, http://mywebserver.com/exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf should show a “Expose 4″ flash icon.
Make sure the webserver has write access to the directory $GALLERYPATH/modules/exlide/smarty/templates_c (you may need to run chmod 775 templates_c)
Install the module from the Gallery2 administration panel and activate URL rewriting for the module (you need to activate all three options that you will find in the Exlide URL Rewriting menu)
http://mywebserver.com/exlide/0 will now show all your albums :-D
Using an album id instead of 0, will restrict the slideshow to only the given album!
Have fun!

Hi,
I’m thrilled of your project with expose and Gallery2. It should be the perfect combination of showing photoalbums. Can you tell me if it works on expose 5? I tried your demo Site but it don’t seems to work completely. When I start the slideshow and pick a album I get the following message “Could not load album data”. Is this a bug or does it work normally.
Thanks,
Erik

Hi Erik.
Thank you for your comments.
My Exlide is still in “beta” so it does not work perfectly yet. There are some special cases where it does not work.
As fas as I know:
* It does not support nested albums
* It does not support “pictures” not put in any album (like pictures that are in the general gallery album)
* The flash does not show pictures which are not JPEG (It may show other kinds but I know that it does not show gif, f.i., and if only one of the pictures in an album cannot be shown you may get the ”
“Could not load album data” message
What’s “Exposé 5″ ? According to this site http://www.slooz.com/trinkets.php?proj=expose, the latest is exposé 4.4 !

I love what you’ve created.. much thanks!
I have an issue at the moment.. when viewing the list of albums, the album thumbnails overlap the album titles (the text is under the right side of the image). Also when i click a picture from the image strip to enlarge it, the enlarged picture is overlapping the controls at the bottom! I’m a flash developer, and my guess is that the MC isn’t re-measuring and re-positioning according to the image size. Just a guess, I havent looked at the FLAs. Please let me know if u have heard of this prob before, and have an answer.. thanks!

Expose has a lot of parameter that can be used to adjust the flash to the size of your thumbnail and to the size of your images. I modified myself the config.xml accordingly with the settings I have in Gallery 2.
Try, for example, to change the value parameter “Album List Item Height” to change the size of the thumnails or the value of “Main Panel Y” to move the panel up and down.
Anyway, I advise you to take a look at the documentation of Exposé for more detailed explanations.

Maybe this address in your description is wrong:
http://mywebserver.com/exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf
the correct one is
http://mywebserver.com/expose/expose/swf/expose.swf
June 27th, 2006 at 5:38 pm
No. The description is right. The original installation of expose puts everything in expose/expose. My module, to work, need to be in /exlide
July 11th, 2006 at 9:41 pm
Excellent work. Many thanks for your efforts.
I too get ‘could not load album data’; it works fine in firefox on multiple PCs, but not in IE. I have uploaded, deleted, and re-upped a few simple test jpgs (jpgs only).
Any idea what could be causing the problem? I’ve done all I can think of to eliminate IE’s settings as the issue.
July 11th, 2006 at 10:48 pm
The problem on Internet Explorer has been resolved with the 0.10 release of exlide. Please upgrade!
July 21st, 2006 at 6:45 pm
Wow, this looks very cool. However i am having a major problem getting this to work.
My URL rewrites are working, all three of them. The sample album displays..but when im in ‘gallery’ and choose to display flash slideshow, the expose application comes up, the album list comes up (so far so good), but then when i choose an album, it immediately comes back with “Could Not Load Album Data…”..
I’ve tried everything i can think of.
Im running gallery 2.1.1 on Apache-OSX.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

seem to get error when gunzip exlide-0-10-tar.gz. I am a linux newbie and I have a linux host. Any advice on what to do with exlide-0-10-tar.gz would be great. Regards, Deyton

Wow, this was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for your hard work. Is there any way to customize the html page on which the flash slideshow is displayed? I tried editing expose.html and showpic.html, but neither made a difference.
August 6th, 2006 at 9:53 pm
is there any chance that Exlide would work with Wordpress>WPG2>Gallery2 solution?
As I see, you’re running your site on a wordpress too :))
August 10th, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Hi there, nice, very nice and helpful utility. Thank you alot!! Unfortunately it does not work completly. A little bug is in the modul. There ist a ouput of “baa” in the upper left corner and the Album Data could not be loaded. Any suggestions?
August 26th, 2006 at 3:54 pm
I think this is a great idea.
Unfortunately I can’t get it to function correctly.
For some reason when it loads I get the text ‘baa’appearing at the top left and when I click on the magnify icon I get a broken image icon. I have re-installed and re-enabled a dozen times. I’m using gallery 2.1 maybe there is a conflict?
Thanks for any advice.

I have successfully enabled URL rewrite, however if I try http://mywebserver.com/exlide/0 I get a page cannot be displayed message. If I try http://mywebserver.com/gallery2/exlide/0 I get a page with expose, however no images or messages are displayed.
When I take a look at the .htaccess file in the gallery2 directory, I see all of the rules from the gallery2 rewrite module (including the 3 for exlide). Should those rules be in a .htaccess file in the exlide directory as well?
September 18th, 2006 at 1:29 am
My top-level list of albums shows up correctly, but I consistently get “Could not load album data for (album name)” when I click on an album. This is a multi-site G2 installation.
Any ideas?
September 19th, 2006 at 8:35 pm
Can you also provide instructions for Windows based gallery2 installation that does not have mod_rewrite module (running IIS). I am trying to configure the flash gallery and having issues. Looking through code i dont think the XML file is being generated or referenced to properly by expose.
Thank you for your help

Very interesting, and I would love to get it to work. For some reason I can’t seem to though. I get a blank screen, and my apache error log shows:
File does not exist: /exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf/swf/artwork.swf
Looks like it’s looking for /swf/expose.swf/swf/ which doesn’t exist, I do have /exlide/expose/swf/ though. I’ve been trying to track down where the bug is, but I’ve not been able to do so yet.
Note that I’m running the Gallery 2 2.2-SVN version, so things might have changed Gallery wise since you did this?
September 22nd, 2006 at 10:18 pm
This is a really great module. Nice work.
I am having trouble getting this to run in embedded mode, however. My site is set up as follows:
mydomain.com
October 4th, 2006 at 11:42 am
First of all, thanks for this module: it’s a great work.
I have the same problem shown in the first comment: the albums list is loaded fine, but there are no pictures when the album is selected.
I have found that it has something to do with the installation directories. I have installed the “exlide” directory inside “/gallery2″. Otherwise, the rewriting rules in “/gallery/.htaccess” make it impossible to load the albums list. However, when the “.xml” file is requested by Expose, it tries to access the “/exlide” directory (that doesn’t exist), and gives an error.
The solution, in my view, would be to use rewrite rules in the root directory, and not in the “/gallery2″ directory, but I haven’t solved this problem.
I would appreciate if anyone has an idea of how to solve this.
Thanks
October 11th, 2006 at 10:04 am
Hmm.. not working here, i got an “The requested URL /expose/0 was not found on this server”
I installed and activated url rewrite module in gallery. and activated all the three options, what am i doing wrong?
i can see the flash http://mywebserver.com/exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf though
any help is greatly appreciated
thanks

Hi Trung, I need to take a look to your site to help you.
October 12th, 2006 at 10:45 am
Hi. As I suspected, you are running gallery not at the root.
Currently my module works only if your run it in a specific subdomain as
http://galley.yoursite.nl/
and not if you run it
http://www.yoursite.nl/gallery2/
October 12th, 2006 at 11:40 am
Exlide is so sexy!
With Roberto’s support I managed to get it working right! and it looks sweet!
I made the mistake by having gallery visible at:
http://mywebserver.com/gallery2/ as it should have been http://gallery.mywebserver.com thus having the exlide directory as http://gallery.mywebserver.com/exlide
Step 2 was to finetune the Expose settings to fit my needs, thumbnail padding, text and panel positioning etc. The config.xml of expose can be found in the config directory.
Thanks for this excellent piece of work!
October 25th, 2006 at 6:27 am
Hi there,
Exlide looks to be beautiful; however, I can’t get it to install. I don’t have gallery2 installed on a subdomain (I have no idea how to migrate my gallery there). I write code (but almost nothing having to do with web programming). Would it be possible for you to walk me through what I’d need to do to get Exlide working for non-root gallery installations?
Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for a great module!
I was wondering if you would be so kind to give me some directions on how to enable the module to function when gallery is not in root folder as it has to be in a subdirectory in my case? Thanks a lot!
November 5th, 2006 at 9:00 pm
Hi,
i’m using gallery2 and i like the look of expose.
I think exlide is a good combination of both galleries but it won’t work on my site.
When i use the link “http://mywebserver.com/exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf” I see the expose flash logo.
The webserver has write access to the directory $GALLERYPATH/modules/exlide/smarty/templates_c.
http://mywbserver.com/exlide/0 my providers says “Error 403: Forbidden”
I normaly uses the siriux theme without sidebar. I tried the classic look with sidebar and use the “View flash slideshow” link. this link tries to open the page “http://mywbserver.com/main.php/exlide/0″. It shows the flash, but without any pictures, albums, or something like this.
Do you know the problem? What should i do to make Exlide work on my site?
Greetings
Michael

Roberto—-
I am puzzled, I think I *should* get this working;~/
Am dissatisfied with the existing (Javascript) slideshow with G2 (disaster with 500+ images in albums), the full screen JAVA slideshow is very erratic (also some of my users cannot do JAVA), so your version coupled with Exposé4 looks encouraging and very presentable. However I must try my own images and any impact on my server’s CPUs. Have been wholly unable to get it working.
Never before have I used Flash, either as a user or as a content provider! Now IE6 has Adobe Flash Player 9 and so has Firefox2 (my favourite browser).
Gallery2.1 is running on my own Linux server right here ie I have shell access and .htaccess files. The gallery’s URLrewrite module is in effect and I have enabled all three exlide sections in admin.
My gallery runs in the domain’s root but I use my own frontend (hate toplevel album thumbnails). From what I can see ‘everything’ seems proper… but no pictures or albums or anything after the icon then the triangle arrow.
Exposé4 is now v4.6.
Some of your site’s instructions are confusing for me. Nevertheless I have put the Exposé4 stuff into the Exlide module section as seems logical. I need ’something’ to work before I can start testing or tweaking;-)
If you wish, please reach my domain (as email address), give yourself a registration and access any album. The slideshow linker is below any of the photo images (not thumbs).
The given email address has been whitelisted on my server and can be used for any private messages. My timezone is GMT (United Kingdom).
I would like to get this to work and give Exlide/Exposé4 a good trial;~)
—-best wishes, Robert

Hi,
This is really cool!! Any chance the module will support http://mywebserver.com/gallery2/ ?
Else, what files would need to be modified?
November 28th, 2006 at 3:09 pm
Hi site admin,
I appreciate your efforts to setting up this module,
i’m facing a little problem as mentioned below:
http://www.larkiyan.com/gallery2/exlide/0
it opends my albums which are mixed with each other and the main problem is when i click on one of the album it gives me “Could not load album data” message.
Please give me a qick solution, as i spend long time to configure the mod_rewrite stuff :) Thank you admin
November 29th, 2006 at 9:34 am
Hi Trung,
I have the same problem like you. I have my installation under http://www.heldmannpotente.de/gallery2 and would really like to use expose.
Could you please describe what you did change to make it work ?
Thanks for your help
December 4th, 2006 at 7:37 am
Ah, I was having the same problem as Trung. I’m glad to have the solution. I have now successfully integrated your module, and I love it!
Do you have any idea when you’ll release another update? Expose just added some features that myself and I’m sure others would be interested in. For example, auto-start of the slideshow. However, they changed expose.html, so there will have to be updates to your Expose.tpl.
Thanks for a wonder module!

Hi Roberto!
This looks like a great module and I’m trying to get it configured on my site. I followed all the instructions, but I am getting the following error when trying to load any album at:

I can see the flash trying to load, but I don’t believe it can find the XML files to load any data. Can you please help me?

Do any settings or configurations change with the new update to Expose v4.6?
December 30th, 2006 at 10:39 am
Thanks for posting that Trung. I too have gallery installed in a subdirectory, because it’s embedded into another CMS. I’m currently waiting on my new subdomain to propagate and hopefully it will work after it does.
December 30th, 2006 at 3:09 pm
Well, not working here. I can’t create a subdomain, because my gallery directory .htaccess requires rewriting the url to add ‘gallery/ to be embedded. I can load expose and it shows the album information, but no pictures and it says that it can’t load the album data. I had to setup a symlink just to get that far, but it wasn’t enough.
January 15th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Hi Robert,
I installed everything and still can’t get it to run. The error I am getting is:
Fatal error: Smarty error: unable to write to $compile_dir ‘/home/aprokos/public_html/gallery2/modules/exlide/smarty/templates_c’. Be sure $compile_dir is writable by the web server user. in /home/aprokos/public_html/gallery2/lib/smarty/Smarty.class.php on line 1095
Do you know what this might be? Thanks!

I setup your program on my gallery installation and then read that it needs to be on a sub domain so I did a fresh install on gallery.traffan.com but I still get the the same issue Trung was having before you helped him get it working.
So what is the secret to a working install? Your pgram looks awesome and I’m really excited about it but I just can’t seem to get it working.
Thanks.
January 23rd, 2007 at 7:53 pm
First off thanks for the great module, it works wonders! I have managed to get it all set up and working on my gallery/server.
But I am just wondering can I integrate it on another website? As all the link are relative (e.g.
/exlide/expose/config/strings.xml
) I tried making them absolute (e.g. by adding
http://www.domain.com/exlide/expose/config/strings.xml
) but after making a test HTML file on my desktop it loads up the flash app, but fails to load up my gallery.
Does any one know how to get it working when you try and access the gallery from another website?
Or does anyone have any HTML examples that makes, say this demo flash app http://foto.viaggiarenelpollino.com/exlide/7 work, from say a HTML file on your desktop?
January 31st, 2007 at 6:04 pm
I finally got my version to run, but the album thumbnails are all jumbled one on top of the other. I tried tweaking various settings in the cofig.xml file, but everytime I change the file the module uninstalls itself. The only remedy is to unintall and reinstall and enable url rewrite again. Also, there is no button to leave the slideshow and return to the album you were viewing from what I can see…only the browser’s back button. See:

This is a great plugin! Unfortunately, I’m like the others and can’t get past the “Could not load album data” messages. My gallery has nested albums too.
February 26th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
Ciao!
I have followed the installation procedure but I do not succeed to approach the page of configuration of exlide (i’m not able to activate URL rewriting for the module: a’ve activate successifully it, but i’doesn’t seen it from the amministration panel)
I’m in this situation: http://mywebserver.com/gallery2/exlide/
infinite thanks

Hi Roberto,
wow, I’m very inpressed of your wonderfull work!!! It seems to be a very good combination with gallery 2 ;-)
My Gallery installation is not directly in a subdomain - so I can’t use yourr fantastic exlide-plugin to show my fotos.
I think it would be an great improvemtnt für this plugin, if it would run with a gallery installation in a subfolder (as the default installation would do).
It would be also helpfull, if you could add this prerequisit to the ‘installation & requirements’ section.
Thanks for your support,
Jens
PS: Do you plan to modify this in an further version? It would be really great ;-)
March 11th, 2007 at 8:20 am
Well, I can’t seem to get it working at all. When choosing “show flash slideshow” from an album or if just going to direct /exlide/0 URL, I always only get the little expose icon with loading progress bar, but the bar doesnt complete and the page sites there showing nothing.
G2.2 RC2, URL rewrite active
Any help?

Hi Roberto,
I am trying to get Exlide to work with my gallery at http://www.northampton-academy.org/gallery2/ but when I click view slideshow all I get is an Expose loading screen which freezes before it completes. Any ideas?
April 9th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Hi,
unfortunatelly exlide don’t work with the latest Version 4.6 of expose4 :(
Could you please fix it?
April 14th, 2007 at 5:36 am
I was able to get exlide working when it’s installed in a gallery sub-dir (vs. at the root). This may not be a final solution but here’s the diff from the old module/exlide/templates/Expose.tpl to the new one (the stylesheet doesn’t exist but I change the link anyway). You’ll want to change “gallery” to what ever your sub-dir is called.

Hi everyone..
I’m trying my best to download the gzip file, and for some reason, I can’t seem to get any files out of it.
IF I use Firefox to download it, I get one giant file.
If I save link, and try and open it with WINZIP, I get a screwed up file….
Any idea on how to download this on a windows machine? THANKS!

Roberto - i’m a little confused on how this should work. i have the module installed in gallery-path/modules/exlide and webroot/exlide for the expose part, but when i click to view a flash slide show from the main page, all i get is a blank page. if i try to access directly via /exlide/0 i get a page not found. i do have gallery installed as gallery.mysite.com. any ideas?
May 31st, 2007 at 12:30 am
I’m trying to get things to work, but nothing seems to go. I’m utilizing Gallery 2.2, Expose 4.6 (4.4 is no longer available), and the EXLIDE module that I downloaded above. I even have it under a subdomain, but it’s still not taking. I’ve set the template_c folder to 775, set URL Rewrite and activated the one’s needed for exlide. Is there some incompabilities with Gallery 2.2 and Expose 4.4 with your module?

I really would like to use this module as I think it is a great feature, but my provider (Strato) does not support rewrite. Is there a way I can bypass rewrite and still make exlide work?
Thanks…
July 11th, 2007 at 10:45 pm
I followed your instructions and my website
gallery.whatsclicking.net/exlide/0
does not seem to do what your gallery does. It shows up an empty page, with “Select album”…what could be wrong???
August 15th, 2007 at 3:39 am
Does this work with expose 4.6 and gallery 2.2? I installed this as per your directions but so far, no luck. Rewriting is working and a direct link to http://example.com/exlide/expose.html shows the samples, but it doesn’t seem to be working from the “View Flash Slideshow” link that exlide added to my gallery pages.
Also, http://example.com/exlide/0 shows a blank page and safari tells me that no such page was found.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated…If you are no longer supporting this or it doesn’t work with expose 4.6, can you post a quick reply so that I can look around for expose 4_r4?
Thanks in advance
September 18th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Really nice module - great work.
I have follow your instructionsa and created a subsite e.g. http://subdomain.mywebserver.com/. I placed the exlide folder so that it was at http://subdomain.mywebserver.com/exlide and expose.swf (version4.6) so that it is at http://subdomain.mywebserver.com/exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf.
When I try to visit http://subdomain.mywebserver.com/exlide/7 the flash loader starts to load and then suddenly stops half way through.
Do you have any suggestion what I could alter or correct?
October 24th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
I have an issue with the exlide plugin. For some reason, when I go to the link, it will show me the Expose flash plugin but it won’t fully load. It just sits there about 1/4 way.
Is there something I am missing?

This module is not compatible with the newest Expose 4 r6; download the old Expose 4 r4 swf file at http://yui-life.com/gallery/exlide/expose/swf/expose.swf and replace it in your swf folder.
To run Exlide in a gallery subfolder, file path modifications need to be made in the Expose.tpl file. I got mine running in a subdirectory called /gallery. You can download my template file at http://yui-life.com/gallery/modules/exlide/templates/Expose.tpl and modify it to fit your subdirectory name.

Good morning!
The idea is great.
I adopted the module a bit. Now it REALLY serves nested albums. pls. have a look under http://www.david-steinberger.at/gallery2/exlide/547.
further i modified the compilation of the thumbnail-pics. my default th.size was too big and you can’t have 2 different th.sizes at the same time.
i’m not finnished with the modification, this is a first draft:
i have some problems in the ie7. does s.b. know why the version 6 is not displayed right?
does s.b. know how we could implement this via a lightbox-effect.

Hi,
I have something wrong that can’t load album with expose.
I did:
- Upload and extract exlide to: http://www.mywebsite/gallery/modules/exlide
- Active plugin in Gallery admin.
- Upload expose (replaced swf with v4.4 from hl comment) to http://www.mywebsite/gallery/exlide
- Upload expose.tpl (from hl comment) to replace modules/exlide/templates/Expose.tpl)
Note: My website can run with subdomain or subfolder
http://gallery.esharewares.net
http://esharewares.net/gallery
both of URLs can’t work with exlide
The modules path like
http://esharewares.net/gallery/modules/exlide
The expose
http://esharewares.net/gallery/exlide
Please help me to fix it.
Thank you.

Hi,
I have Gallery 2 installed with URL rewrite activated without warning. I did check all three boxes for Exlide and activated Exlide. However, when I clicked “View Flash Slideshow” in any album, I get the “Expose 4″ icon with a loading progress bar and it just sit there, the same as when I open expose.swf directly from Windows Explorer without any parameter. I’m pretty sure I followed the instrictions carefully. Do you know what is the problem?
Thanks

Maybe you look for something like that flash gallery?
It’s simple and free.
